Don’t buy corn tortillas. These are the easiest to make and they are very cheap.
I love making corn tortillas, you only need maseca, a pinch of salt, and warm water, that’s it. Whenever I have time I prefer to make them than buy them. The flavor is different from store bought.
If you have had the curiosity to make them but just feel a little intimidated, please don’t. Nothing can go wrong with these and if they don’t turn out okay, try again. It won’t take you too much time to learn the right consistency to make the perfect tortillas.
- 1 cup Maseca
- pinch of salt
- ¾ cup warm water
- Preheat your skillet to medium high.
- Add the maseca to a container.
- Slowly add the warm water and mix until you get a sticky dough.
- Add more water if it is too dry, or more masa if it's too sticky.
- Divide the dough in small sized balls.
- Press the balls, one at a time, with the tortilla press putting one piece of plastic on top and in the bottom.
- Put it on the skillet and cook about 20 second per side.
If the dough sticks to the plastic and you can't get it out it's because it is too wet. You would just have to had more maseca.
If the dough breaks easily it's because it's dry and it needs more water.
Sometimes the masa dries if you wait too long. Just sprinkle water if that happens.
